Meet Movement Maker Mike Shemancik

At VF, we power movements of sustainable and active lifestyles for the betterment of people and our planet. This is our Purpose and it is powered by our Movement Makers—associates who are committed to making a positive impact in their communities and around the world. In this new series, we’ll feature these associates and highlight how they’re doing their part to make the world a better place.

A little bit about myself
I grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania and was the first person in my family to go to college. I’ve spent the last 25 years working in information technology and management, and have helped launch more than 100 technology projects. At VF, my role is focused on creating amazing technology experiences for our associates around the world. It’s a challenging job because technology and the needs of our associates change so rapidly, but I’ve always sought roles where I can utilize and stretch my abilities, and I enjoy the challenge.

What drives me to be a Movement Maker
I’m driven by a desire to use cycling and athletic activities to bring new experiences to individuals who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity, including children with special needs or youth in disadvantaged circumstances. This provides them with an opportunity to enjoy a greater degree of freedom than they’ve likely ever experienced, like feeling the wind in their face, the sensation of speed, and hearing the cheering of the crowds. It’s so rewarding to see the smiles on their faces when they’re participating in the races, and their parents beam with pride, too.

Guiding principle I live by
The Guiding Principle I live by is Act with Empathy. It’s a principle my grandmother instilled in me. She taught me to treat everyone with kindness, generosity and respect. This is what inspired me to start a nonprofit for children with special needs called Chariots of Freedom. We pair children with an athlete so they can experience competitive events like triathlons and cycling or running races. People sometimes assume that children living with disabilities are limited in what they can do, but that’s not the case. By seeking to understand their circumstances and making activities accessible for them, you’ll see that they can do amazing things.

How VF powers my work
Acting with empathy is a principle that guides VF and its associates around the world. Working for a company that gets the importance of understanding and respecting differences not only inspires me, but also empowers me to go out into the world to make a positive impact.
