Q&A with Leon Li, Senior Manager of Global Talent Acquisition, VF

For Leon Li, a global talent acquisition meeting late last year turned out to be a career-altering experience.

At the time, Li oversaw talent acquisition for VF in Asia, and was working out of VF’s Shanghai office. But, in meeting with his colleagues and counterparts from across the globe, Li learned about the growth and innovation taking place throughout the entire VF organization. And, he knew that VF was a place where employees could not only have a great job, but where people could build rewarding careers — not only in Asia but in every corner of the world.

Turns out, that was a good takeaway. His career path was about to go global.

In six years with VF in Shanghai, Li has held four positions, and those assignments have carried him from Asia to VF’s global headquarters in Greensboro, N.C. Li recently relocated to Greensboro from Shanghai to take on the role of Senior Program Manager in Global Talent Acquisition Team.  Here’s what he had to say about his experience working for a global organization and how managing change has been critical to his career. 

What did the move to Greensboro mean to you personally?

When I moved to Greensboro, I was the first person to take on an international HR role in that office. VF’s HR organization is undergoing a transformation so it was ideal time for me professionally to relocate and take on this role. It was also an amazing opportunity for me personally to live and work in another country and experience all that comes along with that transition.

Why is change so important? 

Change means opportunity, and that leads to more ideas, innovation and success. If you don’t embrace change, you will not experience new opportunities. We’ve seen great expansion in different areas of VF: our businesses, brands, workforce and geographies. Those opportunities come about when our employees not only accept change, but embrace it and drive it. Change \ is the one career constant, but more importantly, it is critical to our future.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering relocating for a job?

Employees need to be able to determine what is the “right” change for them – right timing, right opportunity and right location— and what it means for their careers, their families and their futures. Sometimes that can be difficult. As an organization that is driving change every day, HR professionals like myself can help them assess new opportunities, prepare for change and ensure a smooth transition.

What do you hope to accomplish in your role at VF in Greensboro?

Personally, my primary objective is to broaden my horizons and global perspective. Working at VF’s global headquarters provides great insight into our different businesses, platforms and brands. I want to help the company continue its momentum as a diverse and inclusive workforce, support our growing businesses and continue to build and develop a strong team of associates for VF.

Outside of work, what are your hobbies? What do enjoy about living in NC?

Greensboro is great place for hiking, which is a new hobby for me. During the weekends, I also like spending time in the mountains of North Carolina, particularly in the fall to enjoy the beautiful views and sunshine!
