Q&A with Julie Udell, District Manager for lucy®

Julie Udell is always focused on building community.

As the District Manager for lucy®, she oversees a dozen lucy retail stores in Portland, Seattle, Denver and Southern California. Her mission is to build a strong sense of community with lucy fans — women who love to move. 

Udell has always been someone who loves to move. So, joining the lucy brand five years ago was the perfect fit.

What makes working at lucy unique?

Everyone at lucy thrives in a passionate environment. Our customers, which we call fans, are passionate about being active, and lucy associates get to help these fans on their active journey. I love watching my team interact with lucy fans.

We want to engage with our fans and fitness professionals both inside and outside of the store. Each store hosts monthly events or a studio showcase — whether its yoga, cycle or barre class. This connects our product back to the performance activities for which they were designed.

What is a typical day for a lucy District Manager?

I spilt my time traveling and working in-store with my associates on our objectives — to develop them each individually and bolster our culture. Everything we do is centered on doing the right thing for our fans.

Each time I visit a store, I ask to take a class with my team at that store. In the back room at the store, we have a ‘Fit Board’ posted where we rank ourselves as a novice or expert in a wide variety of activities. The board helps us connect our product to specific activities, while also building friendly competition among the store’s team members. I really enjoy the opportunity to engage with my team members in this way.

How do you collaborate with other lucy district managers and stores?

Our community is strong not only with our fans, but also with all the lucy district managers. All lucy district managers connect at least once a week on a call and three times a year in-person.

This collaborative community helps district managers share best practices and ideas for new initiatives. A great example of how we come up with new ideas together is our studio showcases. We combine exercise classes with free shopping events at exercise studios across the country. We can demonstrate our latest products, talk with fans about their needs and move together during classes. As we say at lucy, “Let’s go!”
