VF Corporation and its Timberland® brand collaborate with Bunka Fashion College on emerging designer development program in Tokyo

VF Corporation, together with its global design hub, the Tokyo Design Collective (TDC) and Timberland®, have begun a collaborative emerging designer development program with Bunka Fashion College (BFC), one of Japan’s most respected fashion institutions. The program, held in Tokyo, is centered on the theme “CRAFT MEETS INNOVATION: Form, Function, and Process.”
Bringing together perspectives from both industry and academia, the initiative creates an opportunity for dialogue and shared exploration between established design practitioners and the next generation of creative talent. By connecting heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary design thinking, the program aims to foster new ideas that reflect evolving cultural and societal contexts.
Aki Tanabe, Director of Product Design Platform (Japan), VF Corporation, said: "At VF, we value the role that design plays in connecting brands with culture and community. Through the Tokyo Design Collective, we seek to create opportunities for open dialogue across disciplines. Partnering with Bunka Fashion College, with its long-standing contribution to fashion education, allows us to exchange ideas and learn from emerging talent in a meaningful way, while supporting their development as they shape the future of design.”
Running from June towards the end of the year, this program brings together nine third-year students from Bunka Fashion College’s Apparel Design Department. Guided by Bunka faculty alongside industry designers, participants engage in a process that combines research, discussion and co-creation.
Throughout the program, students explore social and cultural themes and develop design concepts through field research, prototyping, and presentation. The experience emphasizes not only technical development, but also the ability to frame ideas within broader contexts and communicate them effectively.
Rather than a one-way learning format, the program is designed as a collaborative process, encouraging interaction between students and practitioners. This approach allows for a mutual exchange of perspectives, where both sides can gain new insights from the creative process.
Selected student work developed during the program will have the opportunity to be showcased during Timberland 2028 Fall/Winter Creative Kick Off event at Timberland Headquarters in Stratham, New Hampshire in the United States, providing opportunities for further dialogue within the brand’s design teams.
Mirian Lamberth, Senior Director, Creative Direction, Timberland, said: “At Timberland, the strongest ideas emerge where brand, craft, and culture intersect. Working with emerging designers gives us the opportunity to exchange ideas, challenge our thinking, and stay connected to new perspectives. The best innovation doesn’t happen in isolation, it happens when different experiences, generations, and viewpoints come together.”
Faculty Team, Department of Apparel Design, Bunka Fashion College, said: “In today’s fashion industry, creators are increasingly expected to understand diverse cultures and perspectives while responding to the needs of global brands and audiences. This partnership with VF Corporation, Tokyo Design Collective (TDC), and Timberland provides our students with a valuable opportunity to apply their ideas and expressive skills within a more practical, real-world environment. We sincerely appreciate this opportunity for collaboration and learning, and hope the experience encourages students to further develop their design thinking and creative rigor through direct engagement with professional processes and global brand perspectives.”
Through this initiative, VF, Timberland, and Bunka Fashion College come together to create a space for dialogue and experimentation. The program reflects a shared interest in supporting emerging talent and exploring how design continues to develop through collaboration between education and industry.
